Compatibilism

Writer's picture: Ben ClarkBen Clark

Some ideas about Free Will suggest that we are free to make our own decisions. Some ideas suggest that the universe works like clockwork in a predetermined manner, everything playing out in exactly one way. Many conversations about Free Will see these two ideas as contrary to one another: if the universe works like clockwork, then we cannot really have Free Will: atoms work to the laws of physics, neurons fire in our brains and Free Will is merely an illusion.

But what if we can accept that Free Will exists and also that the universe is predetermined, by arguing that there is no actual contradiction between these. This is the idea behind compatibilism.
