Robert Nozick proposed this thought experiment to challenge the hedonist view that pleasure, in one form or another, is what we seek in life.
Imagine there's a machine which you can step into which would simulate a perfect life, give you pleasant experiences forever, and you wouldn't know that it was a simulation after stepping in. And that's not just short-term pleasure, you would feel personal fulfilment, love etc.
Nozick argues we would not get into the machine, because there are things which are more important than just the experience.
